Living Room & Dining Room Before and After

While I absolutely loved the character of our 100-year-old craftsman style home, I was so excited to finally move from renter to owner. Tanner and I went back and forth quite a bit trying to decide if we would buy the house we were renting, but ultimately decided it needed a bit too much work then we were willing to take on. So this spring the house hunt began.

I have never been involved in the process of buying a home, ever. My parents still live in the house that I grew up in. When we needed more space, my dad would just add another room. I had all these dreamy ideas that house hunting would be just like the TV show. I would be shown all of these beautiful houses that I loved, but would have to ultimately choose one, while letting the other wonderful options go. I also assumed that I would be able to find the exact house that I wanted in the exact location that I wanted. REALITY CHECK, house hunting is not like that AT ALL!! Well at least not in the current market in Kansas City.

What started off as this dreamy adventure I was embarking on, turned out to be a quite a bit different then I imagined . Let’s quickly go over some important details. Once we told our landlord we were not interested in buying the house, he quickly sold the house, we had a lease until July 1, but this meant at some point we would have a new landlord for only about a month. Maybe because I was about 5 months pregnant when we found this information out, I went into major panic mode. Again, in my dream world, if I didn’t find the perfect house that I was looking for, we could simply decide to lease for another year and keep looking. This was no longer a reality. So we had 2 major deadlines. 1. Our lease expiring of course and 2. The birth of our son. It might have had a lot to do with being pregnant, but I don’t think I have cried so much in my entire life as I did during those 3 or 4 months. Poor Tanner had to have weekly calming down sessions with me, as he would assure me we would find something.

We met with our realtor who gave us the low down and then it was time to start looking. Every morning we would get an email with new houses that had landed on the market and every morning I would think I would find “the one.” We started searching far and wide. I of course had a long list of things I wanted, Tanner had a short list of what he wanted, and we hoped to find something we both wanted. We finally found it the house with the charm and the location; I thought it was perfect! Due to the pressure of the market we had to make an offer the same day we looked at it. We made the offer around noon and I waited anxiously all afternoon. Of course I started making Pinterest boards as soon as we got home. Tanner told me this was a bad idea….he was right. We got a sad call from our realtor, saying they had accepted someone else’s offer. To our surprise we would play out this scenario 3 more times!

I lost count to how many houses we had looked and they had all started to blur together. We were down to “the one” number 5 and time was ticking! If we didn’t find a house by the end of that week, we were out of time! Not only were we getting close to the time our lease would run out, but also I was having complications with my pregnancy and it looked like we might have to deliver our son early. We had found a house that we both loved, in a location we both liked (it was a little farther from our jobs then we were hoping). We made an offer…..would we get it?? I prayed and prayed and tried not to worry too much. Finally at around 10:00 that night we got the call that our offer had been accepted! Hooray!

One of the things I was most excited about in our new house was the natural light. Our previous house had a beautiful front porch, but unfortunately, that made the main floor so dark! Even during the middle of the day. I often found myself wishing for more sunlight. Our new home has some beautiful windows in the front room that just bath the entire room with sunlight. It brings me so much joy everyday!

Check out the before and after photos of our new house!
